Gifts come in many forms.  When pledging gifts, your gift is made available to the System during your lifetime, while most planned or deferred gift options will benefit the System through your estate.  There are two types of gifts: restricted and unrestricted.  All gifts benefit the System.

Unrestricted gifts: When a donor makes an unrestricted gift, they do not specify an area that will benefit from the gift.  Instead, the gift is directed to the University’s five campuses by the Southern University System Foundation’s Grants Committee, which receives input from the System president and Campus chancellors.

Restricted gifts:  Making a restricted gift allows you to designate a specific use for the funds, such as support for students, faculty, facilities or various Campus programs.  For example, you may prefer to fund scholarships, professorships, a new library addition or a research program at the Campus you want to benefit.

How soon does my gift benefit the University?

When you make your gift, you designate whether you want the gift to be an expendable or an endowed fund. A gift to an expendable fund can be used immediately by the University for the purposes you designate. The principal of an expendable gift of $5,000, for example, would be available in its entirety to the program, project or college you designate.  The advantage of expendable funds is that they provide immediate support for the University.

When you establish an endowed fund to support Southern University, your gift is invested and only the annual investment income will be available for use by the Foundation.  The net income earned annually from the investment is used for the purpose of the fund.  The advantage of endowed funds is that they grow over time, providing increasing support for the System.

How does the Southern University System Foundation invest endowed gifts?

Endowed gifts are invested in units of the Foundation’s main endowment fund. This increases the value of the endowment, which increases payouts over the years and helps counteract the effects of inflation.  Please review our investment guide and investment committee members
