The Southern University System Foundation Scholarship program provides significant financial support for high achieving SU students. The scholarships are available at all five campuses: Southern University Agriculture and Extension Center, Southern University Baton Rouge, Southern University Law Center, Southern University New Orleans, and Southern University Shreveport.

Our scholarships are categorized as endowed and non-endowed scholarships.

An ENDOWED scholarship is a scholarship where the benefactor(s) has made a contribution(s) to an assigned scholarship fund where the original contribution(s) remain intact. The scheduled investment income from the aforementioned contribution(s) are then used to make annual scholarship award determinations.

A NON-ENDOWED scholarship is a scholarship where the benefactor(s) makes a regular contribution(s) to an assigned scholarship fund. The contributions are then used to make annual scholarship award determinations.

Endowed Scholarships

A.Z. Young Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: John Breaux Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time student at Southern University who is majoring in history, political science, mass communication, sociology, psychology or public administration. The recipient must be a citizen of the United States, a resident or native of Louisiana, and must be a sophomore or higher. The recipient shall also have a true financial need and maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher.

Brenda Birkett Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Brenda Birkett Department: College of Business, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a full-time SUBR sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in accounting or finance. Must be a member of the Student Chapter of NABA, complete and submit an application to the College of Business for the scholarship, have a 3.0 GPA or above, and meet other requirements consistent with the Southern University System policies.

Butler Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Eva M. & Percy E. Butler Sr. Department: College of Education, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must have completed high school in an Iberville Parish school, or West Baton Rouge Parish school and pursuing a degree in a major in the SUBR College of Education. The student must be a full-time undergraduate, and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria.

BP/Castrol Scholars Program

Type: Endowed Benefactor: BP Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Freshmen SUBR engineering student with a minimum 3.0 GPA, minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 990, have a seven semester high school transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Upperclassmen: Enrolled full-time in an engineering program at SUBR, minimum 3.0 GPA and be in good standing at the University.

Transfer Student: Enrolled full-time in an engineering program at SUBR for at least one standing, minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and in good standing with the University.

Average Annual Award: $1,250 per semester


College of Engineering BP1, 2, & 3

Type: Endowed Benefactor: BP Corporation North America (Larry Thomas GM) Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Incoming SUBR freshmen must have a 23 or above ACT score or a cumulative score of 1497 or higher on the SAT. Must be a current SUBR students with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher to apply.

Cynthia N. Clemmons Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Myrtle E. David Department: Visual and Performing Arts, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a sophomore or junior level student in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Southern University Baton Rouge and planning a career in piano or vocal music with a 3.0 GPA or better. Student must be a citizen of the United States, have a financial need, and must be an SU Student and a DeBose Piano Competition Contestant of Highest Achievement College Level VB.

Dr. George E. Robinson Jr. Scholarship Endowment

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Gwendolyn J. Robinson Department: Agriculture & Home Economics, SUBR first time freshmen. Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must have been accepted and enrolled in SUBR as a full-time student at the undergraduate level, declare a major in agriculture with an animal science concentration, complete and submit an application to the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumers Science by March 1. Student must have earned a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in high school courses for seven semesters and a score of 21 or higher on the ACT or equivalent SAT, and meet other requirements consistent with the SUS System policies.

Emma C. Glynn & Joseph R. Glynn Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Emma C. & Joseph R. Glynn Department: College of Education Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be admitted to SUBR as a full-time student at the undergraduate level, have earned a 2.3 GPA or better in high school for at least six semesters or maintain a 2.0 GPA or better, and student must have a financial need.

Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews Department: College of Business, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be an African-American incoming male freshmen with a demonstrated financial and social need, be a full-time student on the Baton Rouge campus, provide a written statement of educational goals, produce two letters of recommendations; matriculate in a department within the College of Business, must have a minimum ACT score of 18 or a 3.0 GPA for the last two years of high school, must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years as long as student maintains a 2.5 GPA or above.

Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be an African-American incoming male freshmen with a demonstrated financial and social need, be a full-time student on the Baton Rouge campus, provide a written statement of educational goals, produce two letters of recommendations to probe for character traits, values and motivation; matriculate in a department within the College of Engineering, must have a minimum ACT score of 18 or a 3.0 GPA for the last two years of high school, must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years as long as student maintains a 2.5 GPA or above.

Jack Binion /MBE Incubator Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Lacy M. Johnson- -Jack Binion Incubator Fund INC Department: College of Business, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a student at Southern University Shreveport and have a 3.0 GPA or better.

Josie Dugue’ Lain Endowed Scholarship of Higher Education

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Josie Dugue’ Lain Department: STEM Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a resident of Louisiana, a full-time student with a major in a STEM curriculum, must have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of student Financial Aid, and must a have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria.

Knights of Peter Claver Council #119 Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Knights of Peter Claver Council #119 Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a resident of North Iberville area, Iberville Parish, LA which includes the municipalities of Grosse Tete, Maringouin, and Rosedale, La. The student must attend college/university as a full-time undergraduate student, must submit a high school transcript with a current 2.8 GPA or higher, must submit current ACT score of 20 or higher, and provide a letter demonstrating need for financial assistance with undergraduate college/university’s tuition and fees. Tuition assistance shall be provided for freshmen year only.

Louis Brock Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Virgie Brock – SU Alumni St. Louis Chapter Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: SUBR student must be a graduating senior who attended a high school located in the greater St. Louis area. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, have some participation in physical fitness either on a sports team and/or participation in regular physical education classes will suffice.

Melvin and Sylvia Sanders Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Melvin and Sylvia Sanders Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a full-time minority student from Louisiana at Southern University Baton Rouge with a 3.0 GPA, be of good moral character, and demonstrates leadership ability and financial need.

Average Annual Award: $1,500 per year


Oscar Justin Coffey Jr. Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Alean Saunders Coffey Department: College of Business, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: College of Business junior with a financial and social need, be a full-time student on the SUBR campus, provide a written statement of educational goals, be of good moral character and have demonstrated leadership ability. Must have a minimum 2.75 GPA.

Procter & Gamble Endowed Engineering Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Procter & Gamble Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Incoming freshmen in the SUBR College of Engineering, must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, have a minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 990, have a seven semesters high school transcript and provide two letters of recommendations. The student is to be selected by the College of Engineering Scholarship Selection Committee.

Upper Classmen and Transfer Student: be enrolled full-time in an engineering program, have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and be in good standing at the University.

Average Annual Award: $2,500 per semester


Procter & Gamble Black Managers Leadership Team

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Procter & Gamble Department: College of Business, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a SUBR full-time minority student from Louisiana, have a 3.0 GPA, be of good moral character and demonstrate leadership ability and financial need.

Raytheon Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: David L. Sullivan, Raytheon Corporation, NCS North Texas Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Students must be in good standing with the University and the College of Engineering, must maintain a 3.2 GPA, and must be studying in the STEM field.

M. Bonhomme Snedecor Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Dr. Sonya J. Snedecor Department: STEM Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a full-time freshmen or above student at Southern University Baton Rouge majoring in a STEM curriculum, and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA or above. Special consideration will be given to those demonstrating financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Alice Coleman Brown Memorial Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Kimberly Brown Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Recipients are selected twice annually. Student must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at SUBR, possess a reputation of good character, participate in community service activities or faith-based involvement or extracurricular school involvement, maintain a 2.6 GPA or higher, complete all sections of the Alice Coleman Brown Memorial Scholarship application form, submit an essay on the topic stated on page two of the application, and submit one letter of recommendation from SU professor or other university professional. Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: AgFirst Farm Credit Bank Department: College of Science & Agriculture, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and major in science and agriculture at SUBR.

AKA/Beta Psi 1998- Ten Year Reunion Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: AKA/Beta Psi 1998 Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a full-time student at SUBR, be an active member of the Beta psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated on the campus of Southern University Baton Rouge, must demonstrate leadership ability in the sorority, in the community and on the SUBR campus, must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, and must not be a graduating senior at the time of selection.

ACS-HACH Land Grant Scholarship

Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Each scholar must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale. Each scholar must be, and continue to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. Each scholar must be a U.S. citizen and have a declared major in Chemistry and demonstrate a commitment to become to become a high school chemistry teacher. Each scholar must agree to submit a brief annual written statement to the Donor describing their career status for the first five years following graduation.

Brenda & Lennel G. Paul Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Brenda & Lennel Paul Department: History Department, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: SUBR student must unequivocally have financial needs, maintain a 2.5 GPA, must be in good standing with the University, provide character reference letter, and must be a sophomore or junior. Recommendation must be by department chairman and two designees.

Browns Group Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: James and Betty Brown Department: College of Business Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Residents of Houstons, Texas or North Webster Parish, Louisiana preferred. Students must be full time at SUBR or SUS in good standing with the university and have a 2.5 GPA or higher. Special considertation will be given to those demonstrating financial needs.

C.W. Toney Scholarship Fund

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: C.W. Toney Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a minority student from the Quad-city, must have a financial need, and must have at least a 2.0 GPA.

Dow Alumni Scholarship Fund

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Dow Chemicals Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA or better, be accepted into the SU System, be a graduate of an accredited Louisiana School-If currently in SU System, applicant must be a Louisiana school graduate. The student must be a minority, U.S. Citizen and be matriculating towards first undergraduate degree and indicate a financial need.

Dow/SU Alumni Scholarship Fund

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Dow Chemicals Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be in good standings with SUBR, have a 3.2 GPA or higher, must be a full-time student and have a financial need.

Genesis Energy

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Genesis Energy Summary of Criteria: Student must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 grade scale (applicants with a GPA no lower than a 2.5 GPA may be considered, but only if a letter from a Southern University faculty member presents a compelling justification in a letter accompanying the application), Engineering or Business majors preferred; other energy-related majors considered such as managements with the Supply Chain Management concentration, Marketing and Sales, etc; Full time, upper-class students (incoming freshmen will be considered if there is strong record of academic achievement and show demonstrated interest in field of study.)

Golden Roots Scholarship Fund

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: ExxonMobile Foundation-Matching Gifts Program Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must maintain at least a 2.8 GPA, be a resident of East Baton Rouge Parish, be enrolled full-time at Southern University Baton Rouge, an undergraduate student and cannot be receiving a TOPS scholarship, and the student must have a remaining financial need after receiving grants or scholarship aid.

Human Nutrition & Food Department

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Dr. Celeste Clark Department: Food and Nutrition, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a SUBR sophomore studying dietetics and/or food management and in good academic standing, maintain a 3.0 GPA or above, completed freshmen year and in second semester of freshmen year when applying; and must be willing to be advised and mentored during curricula study. Students who transfer from Dietetics/Nutrition, Food Management or into another college will no longer be eligible to receive the scholarship.

Joshua Hayward Burnett Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Joshua Hayward Burnett Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a fulltime SUBR undergraduate student, a graduate of an Ascension Parish, Louisiana high school, and must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Special consideration will be given to those demonstrating financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria

Juanita B. Robinson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Robinson Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: The student must be an incoming SUBR freshmen during the fall or spring semester, have a 3.0 GPA or higher, have a financial need, participate in community service, and no criminal record.

Leon E. Valdry Scholar- 1880 Society Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Leon E. Valdry Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Incoming freshmen must have a 23 or above ACT score or a cumulative score of 1497 or higher on the SAT and current SU students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher to apply.

Lorena Jack Chavis & Family Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Lorena Jack Chavis Department: Elementary Education, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a full-time student at Southern University Baton Rouge, must be a graduating teacher candidate majoring in Elementary Education and will receive a teacher certification in both Elementary and Special Education, must be of good moral character, demonstrates leadership ability and financial need, and must have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Average Annual Award: $500 per person


Robert Henry Lee Scholarship Fund

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Patricia Washington Department: College of Education and/or Athletic Department, SUBR Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must be a full-time SUBR student and either a student athletic or physical education major, must be of good moral character, demonstrates leadership ability and financial need, must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Steve Barbre Education Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Steve Barbre Department: College of Education, Baton Rouge Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a full-time student at Southern University Baton Rouge and declared a major in Elementary Education grades 1-5 (BS) or have enrolled in preparation for teacher certification (grades 6-12) with a concentration in English. One recipient will be selected in each of the designated categories. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Southern University System Foundation Scholar- 1880 Society Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: SUS Foundation Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Incoming freshmen must have a 23 or above ACT score or a cumulative score of 1497 or higher on the SAT and current SU students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher to apply.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Summary of Criteria: Selected Students must be the first in their immediate family to attend college, demonstrate a financial need, be enrolled full time, have a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 grade scale, be in good standing with the University, and complete a TMCF scholarship application.

Average Annual Award: $3,125 AVAILABLE FALL 2018


Whitney Bank Scholar- 1880 Society Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Whitney Bank Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Incoming freshmen must have a 23 or above ACT score or a cumulative score of 1497 or higher on the SAT and current SU students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher to apply.

Willie T. & Clara Byrd Square Memorial Scholarship “Book Award”

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Willie T. & Clara Byrd Square Department: Various Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a resident of the Scotlandville community and a graduate of Scotlandville High School, must be enrolled at Southern University Baton Rouge full-time and an undergraduate student, and must have a remaining financial need after receiving grants or scholarship aid based on the FAFSA information and the Expected Family Contribution.

Relatives of the Square family cannot qualify for this scholarship.

Yes I Can Scholarship

The purpose of the Yes I Can Scholarship is to provide support, reward, recognition, and encouragement for high school graduates from St. John the Baptist Parish who have demonstrated excellence in academics leadership, and citizenship. Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Chester and Gloria Lee Department: Engineering, Science, Education, Math, Computer Science, and Business Due Date: February 1, 2017 Summary of Criteria: Must finish in top ten percentage of high school class, be accepted for admission at Southern University Baton Rouge, demonstrate financial need after scholarships and grants, maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher, and major in one of the following areas: Engineering, Science, Education, Math, Computer Science, and Business.

Average Annual Award: $7,500
