Preservation of Frederick Douglass Portrait

The John B. Cade Library is in possession of a rare and fascinating portrait of Frederick Douglass. Of all the photos of Douglass, this is the only picture of him with his daughter, Annie. This rare 165-year-old photograph of Frederick and Annie Douglass is in dire need of conservation and long-term preservation. The photograph was examined and determined to be in poor and unstable condition with distortion and major tears. Funds will be used for conservation treatment to physically stabilize the portrait and to ensure that the image is available for all future generations to appreciate.
