Southern University System Foundation Scholarships for the 2026–2027 Academic Year

The Southern University System Foundation offers a comprehensive scholarship program that provides meaningful financial assistance to high-achieving students across the Southern University System. Scholarships are available to students enrolled at all five campuses: Southern University Agriculture and Extension Center, Southern University Baton Rouge, Southern University Law Center, Southern University New Orleans, and Southern University Shreveport.

Scholarship Opportunities Across the System

The Foundation administers a wide range of endowed and non-endowed scholarships that support academic excellence, leadership, and student success. Examples of available awards include:

  • The Charles F. Smith Scholarship
    Established in honor of Charles F. Smith, this scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate strong academic achievement and a commitment to service.
  • The Matthews Scholarship
    Supported by the Matthews family, this scholarship assists students who show exceptional leadership ability and academic promise.
  • The John and Mary Johnson Family Scholarship
    Funded by the Johnson family, this award supports students who exemplify perseverance, ambition, and leadership potential.


Types of Scholarships

  • Endowed Scholarships
    Endowed scholarships are funded through permanently invested gifts that generate annual income. This structure allows awards to be made each year while preserving the original gift, ensuring long-term impact.
  • Non-Endowed Scholarships
    Non-endowed scholarships are supported through annual contributions and provide immediate financial assistance for the academic year.


Application Timeline for the 2026–2027 Academic Year

The scholarship application period for the 2026–2027 academic year is currently open and closes January 5.

Students are encouraged to complete and submit all application materials before the deadline.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Current Résumé
    Highlighting academic achievements, leadership roles, extracurricular involvement, and work experience.
  • Letters of Recommendation
    Up to three letters from teachers, mentors, or employers who can speak to the applicant’s character, accomplishments, and future potential.
  • Academic Records
    • Southern University students: Most recent semester grades
    • Transfer students: Transcript from previous institution
    • High school students: High school transcript and ACT or SAT scores
  • Personal Statement
    In 500 words or less, respond to the following prompt:
    “Tell us how an HBCU, such as Southern University, has made a difference in your personal or family story, and what that means to you.”
