Scholarship Program

The Southern University System Foundation Scholarship program provides significant financial support for high achieving SU students. The scholarships are available at all five campuses: Southern University Agriculture and Extension Center, Southern University Baton Rouge, Southern University Law Center, Southern University New Orleans, and Southern University Shreveport. 

Our scholarships are categorized as endowed and non-endowed scholarships.

An ENDOWED scholarship is a scholarship where the benefactor(s) has made a contribution(s) to an assigned scholarship fund where the original contribution(s) remain intact. The scheduled investment income from the aforementioned contribution(s) are then used to make annual scholarship award determinations.

A NON-ENDOWED scholarship is a scholarship where the benefactor(s) makes a regular contribution(s) to an assigned scholarship fund. The contributions are then used to make annual scholarship award determinations.

Endowed Scholarships

A.Z. Young Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: John Breaux Department: Various Code: E025 Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time student at Southern University who is majoring in history, political science, mass communication, sociology, psychology or public administration. The recipient must be a citizen of the United States, a resident or native of Louisiana, and must be a sophomore or higher. The recipient shall also have a true financial need and maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Alice and Adrian L Wallace Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: A&A Wallace Department: Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science Code: E96 Summary of Criteria: Recipient must be a full-time student at SUBR; sophomore or higher; maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA; demonstrate leadership and financial need after financial aid fully accepted. Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Scholarship – SUBR

Type: Endowed Benefactor: AKA Foundation Department: All Majors Code: E095 Summary of Criteria: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate students attending SUBR, good academic standing; evidence of remaining financial need after all support and office of financial aid funds.

Average Award: Up to $1,000 per year

Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Scholarship – SUNO

Type: Endowed Benefactor: AKA Foundation Department: All Majors Code: E104 Summary of Criteria: Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate students attending SUSLA, good academic standing; evidence of remaining financial need after all support and office of financial aid funds.

Average Award: Up to $1,000 per year

Artis Davenport II Memorial Endowed Scholarship at SUNO

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Anonymous Department: SUNO majors Code: E092 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a graduate of a high school in Orleans or Jefferson Parishes and attend SU New Orleans campus; maintain a 3.2 GPA or higher; Sophomore or higher to qualify; Exhibit leadership and financial need. Renewable if criteria is maintained, student must apply annually.

Average Award: Up to $8,000 per year

Ben Johnson Sr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Johnson Family Department: Various Code: E012 Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time incoming student or continuing student having graduated from a Louisiana High School, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA or higher. The recipient shall have a financial need.

Brenda & Lennel Greg Paul Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Brenda & Lennel Paul Department: History Department, SUBR Code: E029 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be an SUBR student with verifiable financial needs, maintain a 2.5 GPA, must be in good standing with the University, provide character reference letter, and must be a sophomore or junior. Recommendation must be by department chairman and two designees.

City National Bank Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: City National Bank Department: Business Code: E005 Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time incoming student or continuing student having graduated from a Louisiana High School, maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA or higher. The recipient shall have a financial need and submit a narrative that demonstrates leadership skills through extracurricular activities or community activities.

Clyde and Carrie W. McHenry Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Clyde and Carrie W. McHenry Department: Various Code: E058 Summary of Criteria: This scholarship is awarded to an incoming high school graduate who plans to enroll in a four-year baccalaureate degree program at the Southern University Baton Rouge campus. The recipient shall be a graduating high school senior and demonstrate significant financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. The student must also prove that she/he is a first-generation college student and have a GPA of 3.0 or above and an ACT score of 21 or its SAT equivalent. The student must also exhibit leadership ability through extracurricular or community service activities.

Average Award: Up to $5,000 per year

College of Engineering BP 1, 2, & 3

Type: Endowed Benefactor: BP Corporation North America (Larry Thomas GM) Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Code: Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be either an incoming SUBR freshmen who has a 23 or above ACT score or a cumulative score of 1497 or higher on the SAT or a current SUBR student with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Cynthia N. Clemmons Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Myrtle E. David Department: Visual and Performing Arts, SUBR Code: E002 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a sophomore or junior level student in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Southern University Baton Rouge and planning a career in piano or vocal music with a 3.0 GPA or better. Student must be a citizen of the United States, have a financial need, and must be an SU Student and a DeBose Piano Competition Contestant of Highest Achievement College Level VB.

Diageo Endowed Scholarship – SUBR-SUNO-SUSLA

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Diageo N.A. Inc Department: All Majors; All campuses Code: E99 Summary of Criteria: Diageo North America Inc established a scholarship fund to support students systemwide. Recipients must be full-time in good academic standing with no code violations, currently enrolled pursuing a degree in any major, but preference will be given to Chemistry, Communications, Engineering and Marketing majors, and must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher to be selected. Dr. George E. Robinson Jr Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Gwendolyn J. Robinson Department: Agriculture & Home Economics, SUBR first time freshmen. Code: Summary of Criteria: Recipient must have be accepted and enrolled in SUBR as a full-time student at the undergraduate level, declare a major in agriculture with an animal science concentration, complete and submit an application to the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumers Science by March 1. In addition, the recipient must have earned a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in high school courses for seven semesters and a score of 21 or higher on the ACT or equivalent SAT, and meet other requirements consistent with the SUS System policies.

Earline Jacques Knox Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Yamai Taina Knox Department: All Majors Code: E115 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a graduate of an E Baton Rouge high school, full-time undergraduate in good standing; maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher; provide evidence of financial need; demonstrate community involvement. Renewable if criteria met and student applies.

Emma C. Glynn & Joseph R. Glynn Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Emma C. & Joseph R. Glynn Department: College of Education Code: E008 Summary of Criteria: Recipient must be admitted to SUBR as a full-time student at the undergraduate level, have earned a 2.3 GPA or better in high school for at least six semesters or maintain a 2.0 GPA or better, and student must have a financial need.

Evelyn M. Adams Scholars

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Evelyn M Adams Department: Social Work Code: E117 Summary of Criteria: The scholarship supports a male student, junior classification, majoring in social work attending SUBR. The scholar must provide evidence of an ACT score of 23 or higher or SAT equivalent; maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. Recipient must demonstrate leadership, provide evidence of financial need, and be currently involved in community outreach and student organizations. Renewable if criteria met and applied.

Georgia Caesar Mckay and George Mckay Jr, Memorial Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Gail Nell McKay Department: English/Liberal Arts Code: E090 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must attend SUBR campus, member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc preferred; recipient to provide evidence of high school and/or undergraduate minimum 3.2 GPA. Recipient must provide evidence of financial need and a statement that they are from a single-parent household.

Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews College of Business Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews Department: College of Business, SUBR Code: E015B Summary of Criteria: Student must be an African-American incoming male freshmen with a demonstrated financial and social need, be a full-time student on the Baton Rouge campus, provide a written statement of educational goals, produce two letters of recommendations; matriculate in a department within the College of Business, must have a minimum ACT score of 18 or a 3.0 GPA for the last two years of high school, must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years as long as student maintains a 2.5 GPA or above.

Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews College of Engineering Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Irving J. & Darlene A. Matthews Department: College of Engineering, SUBR Code: 5015A Summary of Criteria: Student must be an African-American incoming male freshmen with a demonstrated financial and social need, be a full-time student on the Baton Rouge campus, provide a written statement of educational goals, produce two letters of recommendations to probe for character traits, values and motivation; matriculate in a department within the College of Engineering, must have a minimum ACT score of 18 or a 3.0 GPA for the last two years of high school, must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years as long as student maintains a 2.5 GPA or above.

Jack Binion/MBE Incubator Endowed Scholarship SUSLA

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Lacy M. Johnson- -Jack Binion Incubator Fund INC Department: SUSLA Business, SUBR Code: E010 Summary of Criteria: Recipient must be a student at Southern University Shreveport, Female Business Major, and have a 3.0 GPA or better.

Josie Dugue' Lain Endowed Scholarship of Higher Education

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Josie Dugue’ Lain Department: STEM Code: E045 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a resident of Louisiana, a full-time student with a major in a STEM curriculum; must have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid, and must have a cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher. Kathleen S. Anderson Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Milbank Memorial Fund Department: MPA SUBR Code: E098 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a SUBR Master of Public Administration student who aspires to a career in public service. They must submit two letters of recommendation with one from an employer and another being from a  faculty member; provide a short narrative on the effect this financial support will have on their life and career.

Knights of Peter Claver Council #119 Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Knights of Peter Claver Council #119 Department: Various Code: E047 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a resident of the North Iberville area, Iberville Parish, LA which includes the municipalities of Grosse Tete, Maringouin, and Rosedale, La. The recipient intends to attend college/university as a full-time undergraduate student, must submit a high school transcript with a current 2.8 GPA or higher, must submit a current ACT score of 20 or higher, and provide a letter demonstrating need for financial assistance with undergraduate college/university’s tuition and fees. Tuition assistance shall be provided for freshmen year only.

Lee Harold Carmichael "Peyback" Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Anonymous Department: Various Code: E086 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a full time SUBR sophomore with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher. Student must demonstrate a financial need for this scholarship and be active in community service activities.

Average Award: Up to $8,000 per year

Lolalisa DeCarlo King Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: David Clark Department: Various Code: E057 Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be an active member of the Beta Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The recipient must provide a one page short essay as part of their application demonstrating their  community service centered qualities. The recipient must be a full-time student attending Southern University and A&M College with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria.

Louis Brock Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Virgie Brock – SU Alumni St. Louis Chapter Department: Various Code: E001 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be an incoming SUBR student who attended a high school located in the greater St. Louis area. The recipient must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, have some participation in physical fitness either on a sports team and/or participation in regular physical education classes will  be sufficient.

Mark and Dawn Malveaux Endowed College of Business Scholarship

Mark and Dawn Malveaux Endowed First Generation Undergraduate Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Malveaux Family Department: College of Business Code: E094 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student attending SUBR; sophomore or higher; with good academic standing; maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher; be Pell Grant eligible; a 1st generation college student; a resident of Louisiana; and provide evidence of remaining financial need after all support and office of financial aid funds.

Melvin and Sylvia Sanders Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Melvin and Sylvia Sanders Department: Various Code: E031 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a full-time minority student from Louisiana at SUBR with a 3.0 GPA or higher, be of good moral character, and demonstrates leadership ability and financial need.

NAUW Scholar SUNO

Type: Endowed Benefactor: National Association of University Women-New Orleans Branch Department: All Majors Code: E111 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a current female student who is a resident of Louisiana enrolled full-time at SUNO.  The recipient must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher; demonstrate leadership; provide evidence of financial need; and evidence of community or organizational involvement. The recipient is required to write a thank you letter to the donor that includes a brief description of her career plans. Renewable up to 2 years maintaining criteria.

Paul & Norma Duell Memorial Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Heishma and Paula Northern, Stephanie Duell Department: All Majors Code: E110 Summary of Criteria: Student applicants must be a resident EBR, WBR, or Rapides Parish, Louisiana; Student must demonstrate leadership; provide evidence of financial need; community or organization involvement for past 12 months; Minimum a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Student to submit a one-page essay entitled, “The Importance of Education of Me’ or “Importance of Education for Economic Growth in a Community”.

Picou Family Endowed Scholarship

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity INC Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: National Chapter Department: Varies Code: E042 Summary of Criteria: This scholarship is for a member of Beta Sigma Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The recipient must be a full-time student enrolled at SUBR, minimum GPA 2.5, in good standing with the school and fraternity. Chapter advisor and/or National designee to select recipient from list of applicants.

Percy and Eva Butler Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Eva M. & Percy E. Butler Sr. Department: College of Education, SUBR Code: E049 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must have completed high school in an Iberville Parish school, or West Baton Rouge Parish school and be pursuing a degree in a major in the SUBR College of Education. The student must be a full-time undergraduate, and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria.

Rev Dr Alvin E Miller and Rita Watson Johnson

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Alvin E Miller Sr D Min Department: Teacher Education Code: E112 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a low-income African American student, majoring in the College of Education with a commitment to teach in public education and maintain a 2.3 GPA or higher. Preference will be given to applicants that are male, ROTC participants, student athletes and individuals native to Fort Pierce, St. Lucie County, or Treasure Coast of Florida.  The recipient must demonstrate leadership, financial needs as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid, community, or organization involvement.

Sandy Bonhomme Snedecor Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Dr. Sonya J. Snedecor Department: STEM Code: E046 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a full-time freshmen or above student at SUBR majoring in a STEM curriculum, and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA or above. Special consideration will be given to those demonstrating financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Average Award: Up to $2,500 per year

SU Class of 1967 Honors Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Class Officers Deamer and Ware Department: Various Code: E051 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be an incoming or continuing full-time student at SUBR and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. They must demonstrate community service and extracurricular school involvement and demonstrate a financial need.

Todd and Gwen Graves Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Todd and Gwen Graves Department: College of Business Code: Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a fulltime student attending SUBR and be pursuing a degree within the College of Business. The recipient must be classified as a freshman or above with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The recipient must also demonstrate the financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria. Multiple awards.

W.E. "Bill" Tucker Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Bill Tucker Department: Finance Code: S030 Summary of Criteria: Recipient must be either an incoming freshman must have a 3.0 g.p.a. or higher, ACT 22 or above or compatible SAT score; or a current SUS with a 3.2 GPA or higher majoring in Business Finance.  The recipient must demonstrate leadership and/or community service or extracurricular school involvement; and must have a financial need.

Winford Roan, Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Winford Sr., and Lucille Roan Department: Various Code: E004 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be a SUBR full-time student and have a 2.5 GPA or above, be in good standing, and demonstrate a financial need.

ACS-HACH Land Grant Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: American Chemical Society Department: Education/Chemistry Code: 0020 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale, be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student, be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and have a declared major in Chemistry and demonstrated a commitment to become to become a high school chemistry teacher. The recipient must commit to submit a brief annual written statement to the Donor describing their career status for the first five years following graduation. Multiple awards.

ACS-HACH Land Grant Scholarship

Anna M. Jones Scholar-1880 Society Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Anna M Jones Department: Varies Code: 0121 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must be either an incoming freshman with a 23 or above ACT score or comparable SAT score or a current SUS student with a 3.2 GPA or higher.  The recipient must demonstrate leadership and/or community service or extracurricular school involvement; and must have a financial need. Arlana Janell Miller Memorial Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Janice Tappin-Miller Department: All Majors Special Group: Active Cheerleader Code: SC091 Summary of Criteria: This scholarship is to memorialize the legacy of Arlana Janell Miller. The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate SUBR student active on cheerleader squad; have an unmet need and zero estimated family support per FAFSA reporting.

ASPIRE SCHOLARSHIP

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Southern U Deltas Department: All majors Code: SU0177 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must attend SUBR; maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA; provide evidence of their financial need; be full time status; be active and involved in community activities. Multiple awards.

BILLIE FRANCES STOVES JONES SCHOLARSHIP

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Billie Jones Estate Department: Secondary Education Code: C003 Summary of Criteria: The recipient must attend SUBR; be a native of Shreveport, LA; classification (junior or senior in award semesters); majoring in secondary education; be a full time student with a 3.0 GPA or higher; demonstrate leadership and/or community service involvement; and provide evidence of their financial need. Browns Group Scholarship
