The Southern University System Foundation Scholarship program provides significant financial support for high achieving SU students. The scholarships are available at all five campuses: Southern University Agriculture and Extension Center, Southern University Baton Rouge, Southern University Law Center, Southern University New Orleans, and Southern University Shreveport.

Our scholarships are categorized as endowed and non-endowed scholarships.

An ENDOWED scholarship is a scholarship where the benefactor(s) has made a contribution(s) to an assigned scholarship fund where the original contribution(s) remain intact. The scheduled investment income from the aforementioned contribution(s) are then used to make annual scholarship award determinations.

A NON-ENDOWED scholarship is a scholarship where the benefactor(s) makes a regular contribution(s) to an assigned scholarship fund. The contributions are then used to make annual scholarship award determinations.

All applications must be submitted with the following required documentation, if applicable: Personal information to include permanent and/or local mailing address, email, phone; Parent/Guardian personal information to include household data; High School transcript, grades, GPA, FAFSA award, ACT/SAT scores, resume’, short bio, 1-3 recommendation letters, list of financial aid applied for and received for upcoming academic year.

PALISADES HOUSING RELIEF SCHOLARSHIPS

Type: Non-EndowedBenefactor: Palisades/Emet Capital Management Department: SUBR Campus Summary of Criteria: Southern University Baton Rouge full time students with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Must reside in The Palisades and submit a narrative outlining how you would benefit from the scholarship. Evidence of financial need and work study, transcript will be used in selection. 28 recipients will be selected each academic year. The scholarship is not reoccurring — students must apply for the award annually.

Average Award: $3000 reduction in rent on a 10-month lease

Endowed Scholarships

A.Z. Young Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: John Breaux Department: Various Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time student at Southern University who is majoring in history, political science, mass communication, sociology, psychology or public administration. The recipient must be a citizen of the United States, a resident or native of Louisiana, and must be a sophomore or higher. The recipient shall also have a true financial need and maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher.

City National Bank Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: City National Bank Department: Business Code: E005 Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time incoming student or continuing student having graduated from a Louisiana High School, maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA or higher. The recipient shall have a financial need and submit a narrative that demonstrates leadership skills through extracurricular activities or community activities.

Average Award: $1,000 per year

Knights of Peter Claver Council #119 Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Knights of Peter Claver Council #119 Department: Various Code: E047 Summary of Criteria: Must be a resident of North Iberville area, Iberville Parish, LA which includes the municipalities of Grosse Tete, Maringouin, and Rosedale, La. The student must attend college/university as a full-time undergraduate student, must submit a high school transcript with a current 2.8 GPA or higher, must submit current ACT score of 20 or higher, and provide a letter demonstrating need for financial assistance with undergraduate college/university’s tuition and fees. Tuition assistance shall be provided for freshmen year only.

Average Award: $1,500 per year


Mary Meadors Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Meadors Family Department: Various Code: E013 Summary of Criteria: Summary of Criteria: The recipient shall be a full-time incoming student or continuing student having graduated from a Louisiana High School, maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA or higher. The recipient shall have a financial need and submit a narrative that demonstrates leadership skills through extracurricular activities or community activities.

Average Award: $1,000 per year





SU Class of 1938 Honors Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Melba Simmons & A. Williams M.D. Department: Various Code: E011 Summary of Criteria: Must be a full-time student at SUBR and have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Average Award: $500 per year


SU Class of 1967 Honors Scholarship

Type: Endowed Benefactor: Class Officers Deamer and Ware Department: Various Code: E051 Summary of Criteria: Must be an incoming or continuing full-time student at SUBR and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Community service and extracurricular school involvement and demonstrate a financial need.

Average Award: $1,000 per year




Non-Endowed Scholarships

AKA – Phi Psi Omega Chapter Book Award

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: AKA-Phi Psi Omega Chapter Department: Various Code: 0000 Summary of Criteria: Applicant must meet the following criteria: be an Ohio resident and graduate of a Cincinnati area High School within a 20-mile radius; Have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.3; Be an undergraduate with a financial need. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria.

Average Award: $500 per year



ACS-HACH Land Grant Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: American Chemical Society Department: Education/Chemistry Code: 0000 Summary of Criteria: Each scholar must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale. Each scholar must be, and continue to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. Each scholar must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and have a declared major in Chemistry and demonstrate a commitment to become to become a high school chemistry teacher. Each scholar must agree to submit a brief annual written statement to the Donor describing their career status for the first five years following graduation.

Average Award: $10,000 per year


Leon E. Valdry Scholar- 1880 Society Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Leon E. Valdry Department: Various Code: 0121 Summary of Criteria: Incoming freshmen must have a 23 or above ACT score or a cumulative score of 1497 or higher on the SAT and current SU students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher to apply.

Average Award: $5,000 per year



Dr. Nodie M. Washington Chemistry Scholarship

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Dr. Nodie M. Washington Department: Chemistry Code: 0045 Summary of Criteria: Student must be a sophomore Chemistry major with a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0-grade scale.

Average Award: $2,500 per year


Raising Cane’s Annual Scholarship by Todd and Gwen Graves

Type: Non-Endowed Benefactor: Todd and Gwen Graves Department: College of Business Code: 0049 Summary of Criteria: The scholarship recipient shall be a fulltime student attending Southern University and A&M College. The selected recipient must be pursuing a degree within the College of Business. Qualifying students must be classified as a freshman or above with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The student must also demonstrate the financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria.

Average Award: $5,000 per year

Theus and Ayers Memorial Scholarship

Type: Non-EndowedBenefactor: Loretta Theus Department: Various Code: 0070 Summary of Criteria: Incoming freshmen, must have a 21 or above ACT score or a cumulative SAT score of 1060 or higher. Must be a current full-time Undergraduate Southern University System student with a 2.5 GPA or higher to apply. The award is renewable if the recipient maintains the above criteria and demonstrates need for financial assistance.
