Under the guidance of Mrs. Henrietta Barranco, the Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered on March 27, 1940 on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The five chartering members were Lysbia Day, Willie Mae Houston, Garnett Conant Cole, Girthernie Evans Lloyd and Ethel Goines.
The AKA’s Initiated Into Beta Psi fund awards undergraduate and graduate scholarships annually. Awards will be made on a competitive basis for the Fall and Spring academic semesters. In partnership with the Southern University System Foundation, this Scholarship program will provide sizable financial support for high achieving SU students.
