The Dr. Mary Alice Gray Darby Memorial Scholarship

“Accountants can do anything, and everything” – Mary Alice Gray Darby

Dr. Mary Alice Gray Darby exuded confidence, grace and compassion. She was adored by all who knew her and is often remembered for her zeal and dedication to her family, friends and the students. As the former Director of the School of Accountancy, Dr. Darby was instrumental in expanding the number of Accountants and Accounting professionals in Louisiana and the Nation. In 1982, Dr. Darby counted herself among notable first, as one of the first African American’s to earn a Certified Public Accountants’ (CPA) license in Louisiana. Dr. Darby dedicated herself to developing and guiding students and loved ones to reach their highest potential and excel beyond expectations. It is with that same dedication and enthusiasm that she was able to contribute well over 40 years of service to Southern University and in doing so, motivated generations of Jaguars to soar. While educating her beloved students, Dr. Darby also functioned in a number of other roles within the College of Business. She was an advisor to the Southern University Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and instructor in the Garrett A. Morgan Summer Business Institute. She also served as a fundraiser and member of the Host Committee for the Annual Gala on the Bluff Scholarship Event, as well as serving as the Chair of the Scholarship Committee for the College of Business. Dr. Darby’s contributions have also been essential to the success and accreditation of the College of Business.

Her love for education and student success is unparalleled and there is no better way to honor the life, love, legacy and achievements of Dr. Darby than to establish an educational fund and continue her mission. In lieu of flowers, we are asking for your support by making a donation to this scholarship fund. Our goal is to honor her memory by supporting students who display leadership, exemplary character, involvement in community service and will leverage their accounting degree to advance the world.
