SUSLA Gymnasium
About the Project
Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) plans to develop a new gymnasium facility that will serve as a central hub for athletics, recreation, and student wellness on campus. Designed to support both competitive athletics and everyday student engagement, the facility will provide modern spaces for training, instruction, and community events. This investment will expand opportunities for physical activity, health education, and campus life while strengthening SUSLA’s ability to host athletic competitions and recreational programs.

The new gymnasium will significantly enhance student life and campus vitality by providing a state-of-the-art environment for athletics, recreation, and education. The facility will support intercollegiate athletics, intramural sports, and health and kinesiology instruction while creating new opportunities for students to engage in fitness and wellness activities. In addition to serving the campus community, the gymnasium will host athletic events and gatherings that bring together students, alumni, and community supporters, strengthening pride and engagement with SUSLA.
The HPER Complex will feature a variety of spaces tailored to support physical education and recreational activities, including:
- New Classrooms dedicated spaces for physical education instruction
- Modern locker rooms for changing and storage
- Basketball Court: A full-sized basketball court for team sports and practice
- Versatile multipurpose room for various physical activities and events
- Athletic training rooms equipped for sports medicine and athlete care
- Specialized studios for dance and cheerleading practice

The new SUSLA Gymnasium will provide a versatile and modern facility designed to support athletics, education, and campus engagement. The project will feature:
- A competition gymnasium with spectator seating suitable for intercollegiate athletics and major campus events
- Multiple cross-courts to support team practices, intramural sports, and recreational activities
- Dedicated locker rooms for men’s and women’s teams, visiting team locker rooms, and a referee office
- A coach’s suite, equipment storage areas, and operational support spaces to ensure efficient facility management
- A central lobby with ticketing, concessions, and public restrooms to provide an organized and welcoming entry experience for events
- Specialized instructional spaces to support physical education, health, and sports science coursework
Together, these elements will create a dynamic environment that supports athletic excellence, hands-on learning, student wellness, and community engagement at SUSLA.

“The construction of the Health and Wellness Complex will allow our basketball teams to return to campus for home games and afford opportunities for SUSLA to support students through a variety of unique and complementary programs, including intramural sports, new student orientation, residential life, multicultural affairs, and student engagement. This facility will also aide in connecting students and stakeholders – annually, 2500 community residents utilize the facility for voting poll purposes and alumni engagement, 75 percent of all students and faculty utilize the facility for various activities.”
