The Southern University Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic trains future professionals in the field of speech-language pathology and audiology while providing quality care to persons with speech, language and hearing problems. To help enhance it’s services to the Southern University and Greater Baton Rouge communities, the SU System Foundation recently awarded an 1880 Society grant to the on-campus clinic.

The Southern University System Foundation Jag Talker program provides talented SU students with a nine-month internship. During the nine-month internship, Jag Talkers learn and practice the techniques of fundraising and donor recognition, while sharing the impact of giving with current and prospective donors.

Kenner, LA native Robert Easly Jr., a senior agricultural and animal science major has discovered the importance of giving, the value of networking, and the results of hard work while serving as a Jag Talker.

My memory does not permit me to recall a more successful year in the life of our Foundation than 2014. Simply put, 2014 was a phenomenal year! The Foundation recorded $4.2 million dollars in cash fundraising revenue in 2014, versus $2.2 million dollars in recorded cash fundraising revenue in 2013, this represents a 100 percent increase in total fundraising revenue compared to the previous calendar year. We are indeed the beneficiaries of a dedicated staff and devoted volunteers who work tirelessly on behalf of our University.

Keltrin K. Burrell III, is among five students from the Southern University College of Engineering to receive an academic scholarship from Genesis Energy. The Southern University System Foundation partnered with Genesis Energy to create a $100,000 scholarship fund for Southern University students. The scholarship seeks to encourage students to explore opportunities in their chosen fields of study and to develop a relationship with Genesis Energy.

As a freshman, she is well on her way to join the ranks of successful SU alumni, and credits the support that she received from the Southern University System Foundation’s Eighteen-Eighty Society and AT&T as a very important part of her journey to become a teacher.

Jeanerette native Taquincy Alexander is a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering at Southern University, Baton Rouge. Taquincy was valedictorian of Jeanerette High School in Iberia Parish and recipient of the Southern University Honors College Scholarship and the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students Performance Award. He is a member of the Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council, Southern Regional Honors Council, Student Government Association, Men’s Federation, National Society of Black Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation is a community foundation working in the capital region that connects philanthropists with nonprofits to make sure the needs of Baton Rouge area communities are met. John Davies has served as president and CEO since June 1988. During his tenure, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation has grown from $3 million to $608 million in assets.

Louisiana native Leon Valdry says, “people may come and go, but the University has remained for over 100 years.” The 1957 technical engineering graduate, believes that continued support of the University is the key to its success. “It is imperative that we give back to our University,” says Valdry.
